Camelot Castle Hotel has a history that dates back to 1899, when it was first built. Designed by Silvanus Trevail it stands proud on a Cornish headland. In the years that followed it became one of the most sought-after destinations and places to stay in Cornwall, not to mention an iconic filming location for the likes of Knights of the Round Table starring Ava Gardner, and the Dracula movie starring Lawrence Olivier, just to name a few.
In 1999, during John Mappin's trip to visit Tintagel, he decided to acquire Camelot Castle and its adjoining lands as a private residence for his family. Since then, the family have put in extensive renovation works to keep the castle in excellent condition, and have opened up many rooms in the castle to guests. We are honoured to share this marvellous piece of history with those that love Cornwall as much as we do here at Camelot Castle Hotel.
Throughout the seasons we see Cornwall in all lights, be it the bright and colourful blooms of spring, or the glistening calm waters during the summer months. We are now once again feeling the pull of autumn and her inevitable chill, which is where Camelot Castle Hotel comes into its own. A roaring fireplace and a cosy four-poster bed is exactly what you’ll be looking for when the colder months draw in, and here at Camelot Castle Hotel, we have just that. But what else can you expect to enjoy during your autumnal stay?
Camelot Castle Hotel overlooks the ruins of King Arthur. This is a popular destination for those visiting Tintagel and Cornwall’s north coast, and with good reason! The myths and legends that surround King Arthur, Merlin, Guinevere and Lancelot have swirled around this area of Cornwall for years – tales of fearless Celtic warriors and battles unlike any other – so what better time to immerse yourself in a sliver of magical mystery than the weeks surrounding Halloween? The castle itself bodes well for nights spent telling ghost stories, exploring our grand staircase and hidden corridors that have seen more than you know.
It needn’t be all ghosts and ghouls! Instead of spooky stories, why not relax in our luxurious dining area and warm up after a cold, blustery walk along our extensive coastal path? Experience our delicious Afternoon tea but with a festive twist! Treat yourself or a loved one to an afternoon of christmassy indulgence with homemade scones, sandwiches and sweet treats in front of the fire in one of the most breathtaking locations in Cornwall. This is the perfect gift for friends and family that are coming to stay, but don’t forget to book! You wouldn’t want to miss out on festive delicacies and a chance to unwind overlooking the wild seas beyond.
Camelot Castle Hotel is situated high above the seas on the north coast of Cornwall. This also just so happens to be the best spot to watch the magic of a Cornish sunset, setting over the North Atlantic Ocean. You can either reserve your spot in our grand bay windows to enjoy an incredible meal for two as the sun goes down, or you can retire to our patio area, with a warm cup of hot chocolate to end your day. The autumnal hues that adorn Cornwall at this time of year are not to be missed, especially as Camelot Castle basques in those golden sunset rays.
A great perk of visiting later in the year is the peace and quiet that comes with it. As families return to work and school after the summer season, those that enjoy a slower pace of life get to explore a different side to Cornwall. Beach walks become tranquil, Cornish roads become stress-free adventures, our many attractions become less crowded, and there are ample opportunities to explore off the beaten track. Our quaint little village of Tintagel is a great place to explore when the crowds disperse, and you can experience it like a local.
As you use Camelot Castle Hotel as a base for your autumnal adventures, our amazing team of staff will be more than happy to give you some top tips on the surrounding area. You could take a stroll to St Nectan’s Glen, a wild and wandering waterfall steeped in fairytale folklore. Or perhaps a visit to the Museum of Witchcraft in Boscastle, the perfect place to live out your spooky Halloween dreams. There is so much to see and do here, and autumn is the perfect time to tick it off.
